1.Introduction
Styrene acrylic emulsion is a water-based copolymer made from styrene and acrylic monomers. It is widely used in:

2.Styrene Acrylic Production Process
Step 1: Raw Material Preparation
The main components include:

Monomer Mix: Styrene + Acrylic monomers (e.g., butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate)

Water (as the dispersion medium)

Emulsifiers (e.g., sodium lauryl sulfate)

Initiators (e.g., potassium persulfate – KPS)

Buffers (to control pH, e.g., sodium bicarbonate)

Chain transfer agents (to control molecular weight)
Step 2: Pre-Emulsion Preparation

Water + Emulsifiers are mixed in a reactor.

Monomer mixture is slowly added under stirring to form a pre-emulsion.
Step 3: Polymerization (Semi-Batch Process)

Initial Charge: A small amount of water, emulsifier, and initiator are heated to 70–85°C in the reactor.

Monomer Feed: The pre-emulsion and initiator solution are gradually added over 2–5 hours to control reaction speed.

Temperature Control: Maintained at 75–85°C for smooth polymerization.

Post-Polymerization: After monomer addition, the batch is held at 80–90°C for 1–2 hours to complete conversion.
Step 4: Cooling & Neutralization

The emulsion is cooled to 30–40°C.

Ammonia or NaOH may be added to adjust pH (~7–9).

Biocides & Defoamers are added for stability.
Step 5: Filtration & Packaging

Passed through a 100–200 mesh filter to remove coagulum.

Packed in drums, totes, or bulk tankers.
